Rev. Gregory Simpson
Born in Glasgow, Scotland and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Rev. Gregory Simpson is an educator, theologian, and scientist who is passionately engaged in environmental justice and STEM education advocacy. He holds a PhD in organic chemistry and is pastor of Nauraushaun Presbyterian Church in Pearl River, NY, as well as Treasurer of the Presbytery of the Hudson River. He chairs the Environmental and Climate Change Sub-committee within the Presbyterian Church USA and is a co-founder of the Hudson Valley Environmental Justice Coalition, an informal coalition of thirty not-for-profit and faith organizations focused on uplifting the voices of people of color working in environmental and climate justice spaces. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of SUNY Ulster Community College, and co-chairs the advisory board of the Center for Earth Ethics.
Among other things, his research interests include reshaping the ethics that drive tensions between fossil fuel extraction and renewable energy, and the crucial role STEM education plays in environmental and climate justice. As a seminary intern, he worked on the Christian Education Ministry team at The Riverside Church, and in eco-ministry at Broadway Presbyterian Church, both in Manhattan. He has preached and taught at Presbyterian Church (USA), United Church of Christ (UCC), Baptist, Congregational, Pentecostal, Evangelical and Lutheran Churches (ELCA). He and his wife Suzanne live in Ulster County, NY with their two cats, Calvin and Luther.
