Our effort to reduce pollution in Newtown Creek

On December 12, 2024, Riverkeeper and Newtown Creek Alliance hosted a webinar with city and state officials, joined by representatives from the offices of Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez and State Senator Kristen Gonzalez, along with nearly 70 members of the public, to discuss the city's proposed changes to the plan that will reduce combined sewer overflow discharges into Newtown Creek, which runs between parts of Brooklyn and Queens, over the next two decades.
Video loading...Riverkeeper presented its support for the plan, which will lead to greater sewage capture and treatment while also avoiding Newtown Creek sewer discharges ending up in other areas of the city (though it will trigger a delay to improvement of a tributary to the creek in Long Island City by a decade). We look forward to working with the community to further improve the plan to completely eliminate sewage contamination in Newtown Creek.
