PSC approves contracts for Champlain Hudson Power Express, Clean Path NY – Riverkeeper statement

In response to today's vote by the New York Public Service Commission, Tracy Brown, President and Hudson Riverkeeper, said:
"Riverkeeper is disappointed that the Public Service Commission has approved the Champlain Hudson Power Express project to receive valuable Tier 4 ratepayer subsidies. While we appreciate the thoughtful and exhaustive work of the Commissioners and staff of the PSC entrusted with this decision, we believe this project falls far short of meeting New York’s stated goals of providing a just transition to renewable energy while effectively reducing carbon emissions from our energy sources.
"We are pleased, however, that the Clean Path NY project was awarded Tier 4 renewable energy credits in order to move forward. We recognize the urgent need for more projects like this one that rely on in-state renewable energy sources and batteries in New York City to provide reliable, year-round energy and satisfy peak demand so that the polluting fossil fuel 'peaker plants' that plague city residents can be permanently retired. Riverkeeper will continue to advocate for effective climate change solutions that avoid environmental justice impacts at both ends of the line and minimize using the river as a right-of-way. We will continue to speak out for the well-being of the Hudson River and the residents of the Hudson Valley, with the aim of ensuring that living rivers, on which we all depend, are not unnecessarily sacrificed in the essential rapid transition to clean energy."
