Riverkeeper Commends EPA Decision for Comprehensive Superfund Cleanup of Toxic Newtown Creek

Riverkeeper, New York’s clean water advocate, today commended the Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to list Brooklyn’s toxic Newtown Creek on the Superfund National Priorities List. The decision to list the Creek will begin a comprehensive effort by the federal EPA to remove more than a century’s worth of contamination from the Creek’s murky bottom and to address sites along its banks that continue to leach pollution into the waterway.

Unbelievably, after dumping over a million pounds of PCBs into the Hudson for 30 years, creating the largest toxic waste site in the United States, and spending many millions of dollars on political, legal and PR maneuvering and delay, GE is saying it doesn’t want to commit now to Phase 2 cleanup of the Hudson River. The company offered to commit only to one more year of dredging, while gathering additional data – and only then to decide whether to perform rest of the cleanup.
